progress

Overachievers...

Great job team!!
We raised $1500 for Spring Fling. We successfully raised money and had a raffle to award a special scholarship. We were able to successfully attract more than a dozen applicants to our scholarship, and based on our grading rubric were able to find a very worthy recipient. All told about $1800 worth of fund-raising.

I think we are close to doing our leadership exercise and brief lecture based on leadership "Influence." Beyond that we have the paper to write and I've done a bit of research on that...so I think we are in pretty good shape. I also may need a little help in compiling all our notes and such into a binder of our group for Skye. I'd also like to include the 2 DVD's of photos from Spring Fling and from the Intercultural discussion panel.

Let me know if I'm leaving anything out.

SUCCESS!!

Oh, did I mention it? Success!! $1500 from the Student Senate to the Spring Fling Event. That's right ladies and gents--Goal A is achieved. Thanks to the entire team for continuing to help with this important goal. Hopefully it will encourage other groups toward achieving their own goals.

We did a good thing here, friends. Let's stay focused.

Thanks,

Marko

2 other things...

1. If y'all haven't seen Tom's email, the reading log and reading response due date of 4.9 isn't strict (Skye also told me this after class, which I intended to pass on, but it seems Tom beat me to it, good job man)

2. To add a post to the blog, go to the top right corner of the blog page and click "sign in." This will lead you to your dashboard (if you haven't already, it may ask that you sign in w/ username and password). Once you get to the dashboard, a list of blogs you're involved with will appear and there should be a button that says "create new post" There ya go. I know there's another place where signing in is an option, but doesn't lead to being able to post to the blog, which seems confusing to me, so I wanted to clear it up for all of us!
just to make it immediately visible...

over-achievers...

I'm going to miss school today, Thursday.
Sorry for the short notice. I've got a family commitment I can't get out of.
See you all on Tuesday. I've read Chapter 2 of the book...it gets my vote if you all agree.

Thanks again for the banner Colter.

The senate will vote on our item next week in Aptos. I've heard from Sesario and Sophia and they apologize for letting our item slip off their agenda. It still looks promising for us. Keep the faith.

March 24

Group...

Unfortunately, after checking the senate's agenda we are once again NOT on it. ( AGS is on it this week). I have emailed the adviser and several key senators including Sophia who is our sponsor on this item. It will be on next week or I will know the reason why. (they meet in Watsonville this Thursday, so that would have been a pain anyway)

In our book, several group members seem to be liking Rule #2 which deals with Influence. Skye also voiced her approval of this chapter. Perhaps we could all review the chapter and brainstorm ideas about our class presentation and ideas to make the activity memorable.

Several great things are happening with Spring Fling. Committees our group members will want to be involved with.

A thousand thanks to Colter who created the best frickin banner the class has ever seen. Other groups are visibly bitter.

See everyone on Thursday.

Update Goal 1, Group A

Group:

Many thanks to Rafa for helping me at the senate meeting and to Colter and others who sat through a very boring meeting waiting to get to our issue. (the senate voted twice on whether to open or close the windows...I'm not kidding)

Amazingly enough, it looks like they are going to go for it. The vote is this Thursday at 3pm!! Please plan to attend.

Thanks to Colter for taking on the poster project.

I hope you all received the xerox of the 21 laws...(book index) we want to pick one law to use for our class demo. We will vote on this on Thursday, if you don't have the list contact me. I should have at least 3 copies of the book this week for you guys to read and look through.

A real Communications Club would be an interesting goal for our group. I think there is interest on campus for a club of this kind. Of course, many of us would love to see it happen...the question is if any of us really have the time to commit long-term to an undertaking this big.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Midtown near the beach?

Group B,
I heard from Yarrow last night that she won't be able to make it today. I, however, am still planning on meeting up. There is a mission I need to pull off near Seabright beach (involving huge cypress trees, climbing equipment, and a $500 motorized plane), so anywhere near there would be cool. It looks like it won't rain so we could meet outside unless its too cold. Otherwise there is Taqueria Cancun, right next to Day's market, which is always practically empty (they have way more room than they need for customers) so we could order some chips and get to business... Let me know by phone if you can.

Where do you want to meet today?
I've only heard back from Yarrow.

Goal Group A

Group,

I received this email from our sponsoring senator:

Hi Marko,
Of course! I'll try and get it early on the agenda and will send you a note to confirm asap.
Hope all is well,
Sophia

In addition, I heard from the secretary, Anthony, who confirms he will try to place it early on the agenda. (which is better when trying to squeeze money)

I will work on a quick fact sheet, which we should copy and distribute to the senate on Thursday.
(app. 25 copies).

If Group A is still meeting on Sunday remember daylight savings time...1 hour ahead. So Sunday at 9 am is really Sunday at 8am...(ugh). I've ordered 3 or 4 copies of our leadership book already--they are getting gobbled up and Amazon has some freaky thing when you try to order multiple copies of the same book (they think you are making a mistake).

Whoever is chairing the meeting next week, please add book discussion to the agenda.

I'm honored also to be in this highly motivated group! Great work with the logo and chairing the meeting Rafa!! When will our first fundraiser be???

best,

Marko

Student Senate Meeting

Groupies,

I spoke during Public comments at the Senate meeting today. I also gave out pens and bookmarks. Senator Sophia Forde will sponsor our item and it will be on next week's agenda for $1500.

I will prepare a handout that we can give to the senate addressing major selling points.

I will touch bases with Anthony (secretary) and Sophia to make sure we are on the agenda.

I need Skye and all our group members to get as many people as possible to commit to coming to the senate meeting next week Thursday at 3pm in SAC East. Even if they can only stay through public comments it would be very helpful. 10 minutes of their time could help us accomplish our goal here. Lots of people are coming knocking for money right now, so hopefully they are feeling generous. I made a strong case for it, so I feel we have a good shot at this.

(Can we find one or two of the old posters from last year? They were super cool and would be a good visual. Can we get someone who participated last year to come and comment? Someone ethnic would be ideal, not to put too fine a point on it.)

Talk to you all soon.

Marko

Group B Meeting Location

Whats up Group B?

Hey. Im cool with meeting up pretty much anywhere this Sunday at 2pm for our group meeting. My only request is that we don't meet in downtown Santa Cruz because I will most likely have my saxophone with me, and I don't feel comfortable leaving that in my car in downtown Santa Cruz.

Hey guys,

Mission Statement

Our group is a thriving, dedicated bunch of young people working toward accomplishing our goals while developing better communication skills. Reaching out to the community is our passion! We feel that the only way we can accomplish this is by using good organizational skills and time management, achieving true group synergy, and most of all by continuing to respect each other.

Fundraising

As far as fundraising ideas Gary and I were thinking of doing a closest to pin at the golf courses we are affiliated with. Since we belong to different courses we could possibly have one at both courses. This is a goog way to get money.

Saturday, February 28, 2009

So about fund-raising ideas....
I'm not so sure how the walk-a-thon works...
But a steak sandwich sounds good to me. Also, I will try to talk one of my bosses into providing some shirts/sweatshirts or climbing passes for the scholarship fund-raising. If that doesn't work, we could try talking to Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Company for some beans/gift cards.

-Climbing deals
-Coffee?

What ya think?

Also, here is an idea for our logo. Of course it needs work, but this is a start.

Fundraising Idea's for Cx Scholarship

Hey guys. Go ahead and list any ideas that you may have so that we have a starting point to elaborate on next week... Good Times.

Here are some suggestions that I have already heard come up through discusion/came up with that I know about:

1. Steak Sandwhich Sale
2. "A-Thon" Event- Ex. Walk-A-Thon, Dance-A-Thon, etc.
3. On campus dodgeball tournament. Funds come from team entry fee.
4. Raffle

That's all that I have heard of/came up with that I can think of right now. I will add more when I think of them.

*VERY IMPORTANT: I was able to find out the Cabrillo College Tax ID #. This is awesome because this will make getting donations SO much easier. All we will need to do is write up a document that explains who we are, and what our purpose is.

Good To Be On Board

Hey everyone! I think I'm getting the hang of this? Like the Blog, its looking very solid.
K, I think I've got it, yeah? Can you see this?

minutes from 1st meeting

Hi Everyone and welcome to the Blog.

Meeting Minutes:

After much discussion we decided on 2 goals for the group.

Goal #1 is to raise money for the renting of the theater for the Spring Fling. Our goal is $1500. We will do this by contacting the Student Senate as well as other groups on campus who may wish to support this event.

We must prepare a detailed breakdown with facts, figures and talking points for our presentation to the senate. First step is to interview Skye regarding past Spring Flings.
(questions dealing with attendance, diversity, costs, student learning outcomes, etc.)

Goal #2 is to present a special scholarship which will go to a young person who currently is not eligible for the BOG but also receives minimal help from parents or guardians.

Committee members must develop a rubric for grading the applicants. (need, grades, age, comm. skills, etc). A plan to promote the scholarship should be devised as well as a detailed fund-raising plan to gain the money.

The idea was floated of a BBQ on campus. (steak sandwiches, hamburgers, etc.)

Would Pepsi donate drinks?

Finally the leadership book was discussed. We are leaning toward the "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership" (256 pages) Available on Amazon for $2 plus shipping.

Here is the link:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0785274316/ref=dp_olp_1

Questions, disputes, or other comments should be posted here.

Thanks one and all for a great first meeting.
